Level Up

September 1 · Issue #3 · View online
Level Up delivers a curated newsletter for leaders in tech. Ideal for busy people such as Tech Leads, Engineering Managers, VPs of Engineering, CTOs and more.

Thanks to those who sent me feedback about last week’s newsletter. Your feedback keeps me motivated to continue looking for the best content for leaders in tech.
This week I had the pleasure of speaking at TuringFest, a conference in Edinburgh with three tracks - Build, Grow and Lead. I spoke on the Lead stage, on the topic of “Cultivating High Performing Teams in Hypergrowth.”
Unlike a typical tech-only conference, there was quite a lot of content for founders, product, and sales & marketing teams. I found it refreshing to step outside of the area I normally focus on and encourage you to do the same. I find exploring areas outside of my own expertise a great source for insights, inspiration and creativity. You may find the same.
Please send me feedback and share with others if you find this useful.

I love systems thinking and one of the core concepts is understanding various mental models. This thread on mental models provides some great insights and refreshers.

This week has got me really thinking about mental models that we perpetuate (particularly in this industry) that can prevent us from growing.

Below are the mental models I find best for me. If not helpful to you, I remind you that *you always have the choice to not interact.* 😘

I find myself iterating how there are many different leadership and communication styles. This thread is such a lovely thread about recognising and adapting to a communication style that may not be so common.

I just had such an affirming experience. On my 8hr intl flight back from a conference, I sat next to a father/son. In broken English, the father began to apologize/warn me that his ~10 yr-old son had severe nonverbal autism, and that this would like be a difficult journey. 1/
