Level Up delivers a curated newsletter for leaders in tech by @patkua. Ideal for busy people such as Tech Leads, Engineering Managers, VPs of Engineering, CTOs and more.

You know summer is gone in Europe when the speaking season kicks off. One of my highlight’s this week was speaking at a Leadership Summit that Facebook organised in its London HQ bringing together a number of experienced engineering leaders from Europe at different levels. I was fortunate to share the panel with Joanna Chwastowska, Gemma Silvers and Lila Papadoperaki where we discussed, “Leadership Lessons Learned at Different Stages of Growth” facilitated by Nicola Bortignon. There were great topics that engineering leaders at all levels face. A bonus round was listening to a fireside chat between Rachel Burton (HR Director) and Facebook’s CTO, Mike Schroepfer (@shrep).
I hope you enjoy this week’s content and please send me feedback and share with others if you find this useful.

Rules to building an amazing team:
1. Find smart people who are confident and competent in their own field, and curious about almost everything else
2. Know your limits and admit your own ignorance, then let them address questions you don’t know the answer to 👍
3. Repeat 2 ♻️

This is a reminder the change is never easy:

So many companies are presenting way too glossy and sanitized stories about their transformation journey. Change is never structured and orderly. It is only for real when it feels messy. Change is not complicated, it is complex, and sometimes chaotic

Oracle seem to be keeping to pace at creating a regular release train of Java. I’m interested to see the future of Java versus Kotlin with more and more people betting on Kotlin.
